Skittles Math

The boys and girls had such a good time during Skittles Math today. We have been working hard learning color words, the letter Ss and counting this week. Well, we decided to roll all of those skills into one sssuper activity.

Students were given bags of Skittles. They had to sort them into circles based on their color. They counted how many of each color they had in their bag. This was a fun way to practice our AWESOME counting strategies. Let's not forget how delicious the Skittles tasted at the end!

We See Numbers Everywhere!

The boys and girls in Cottage 2 are becoming expert counters! The are learning strategies that help them keep track of what they are counting. We learned how important it is to touch each object that is being counted. These little ones also know the importance of recounting to self-check.

The students are making great progress recognizing, writing and counting numbers 0-10. They are also learning the number words that match. These number words are Kindergarten High Frequency words that the students will "know by heart".

Mad Scientist McKay

Cottage 2 was very excited to have our first visit from Mad Scientist McKay. The wonderful scientist set up a Five Senses learning lab. The studets were able to explore different centers and learn more about our sense of smell, taste, sight, hearing and touch. Take a look at the friends having fun in our learning lab!

We'll Never Forget

It is hard to believe that it has been 10 years since the sad day that was September 11, 2001. The boys and girls in Cottage 2 were still years away from blessing families with their presence. It is hard for them to imagine what happened on that day; as they get older they will begin to understand the events that took place.

On Friday, our boys and girls learned that something sad happened on 9/11/01...something parents and teachers will never forget. As sad as that day was, many heroes helped save lives and were very brave. We talked about heroes that we have in our lives. The students wrote about some of those heroes. Take a look at a few of the classmates' work.

The boys and girls listened to the book September 12: We Knew Everything Would Be Alright, written by a first grade class. It was a simple, uplifting book that explains that even when something sad happens, our lives go on...the sun comes up...our families still love us. It was a great read, perfect for our young boys and girls.

Scholastic Book Clubs

One of the most wonderful ways to get your child excited about reading is by building a rich home library of wonderful picture books.  I have spent many hours looking at the amazing children's sections in the many local bookstores - I can't get enough! :)   I would like to tell you about Scholastic Book Clubs.  Scholastic offers some of the most popular and authentic children's texts at some amazing prices.  I have included the link for the Online Parent Order information. This is a simple way to order inexpensive books for home.  The books will be delivered to school and each time you place an order, our class receives points that we can cash in for our own classroom library.

To register for the Scholastic Online Ordering  click here.  Our classroom code is J3GHZ.  You will need this code to order from our catalogs. I will also be sending home the catalogs for those of you that would rather not go the online route. :)   I hope that you are able to find some books that you and your family will enjoy reading at home.
