Alphardy!

Alphardy is a WONDERFUL song by Dr. Jean that I am sure you have heard at home. We sing it every morning and I have not seen one student roll their eyes or grunt as we get ready to sing. They LOVE it. It is amazing to see how they transfer the letter/sound correspondence from the song to reading and writing. A few of the students even get the book during Writers Workshop to help them write words. I LOVE to see that start to "Click!!"

Roll and Record

The students on Island 2 are becoming quite the experts of number recognition. This week we played a game called "Roll and Record". Using a dot cube, the students counted the number of dots of each roll. Using a graph, they then had to record the number rolled. This was a great way to not only practice counting a set of dots but also to learn how to read information on a graph. The students were able to tell how many times they rolled a certain number. They were able to tell what number was rolled the most, least, etc... What a fun introduction to a life-long skill!!

Art with Ms. O!

The kindergarten friends are loving our new art teacher, Ms. Paula O'Bannon! She engages the kiddos with her enthusiasm and activities! Last week, she taught the students about textures. The children were able to choose different objects and do texture rubbings using crayons. Take a look at some of the fun we had!!

Choosing Books for Independent Reading!

Independent Reading is a fun way to read and explore books that are around a child's appropriate reading level. Throughout the year, the students will select books in which they are "comfortably challenged", meaning they will come across words that might be new; however, they will be able to use the "tools of a good reader" for help. The "tool" our class is focusing on now is "Looking at the pictures". Looking at pictures in a book gives the reader information and helps them as they try to solve an unknown word.

Take a look at the friends on Island 2 as they select and enjoy books during Readers Workshop!

What a Treat!

A big thank you to Noah's mommy! She came last Friday and read a wonderful story, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. Then she surprised us with a yummy cookie cake to celebrate an awesome 2 weeks of school! Thank you, Mrs. Frauenheim!!

Making Observations in Science

The students on Island 2 are learning that even kids can be scientists!! We can use our 5 Senses to observe the world around us.  We have had a great time reading about our senses and singing about how the senses are the pathways to our brain.  Take a look at some of our little scientists as they use a hand lens to explore objects.

Check out our Five Senses song!!
